Let’s talk about masturbation—the “stimulation of one’s own genitals for sexual pleasure.” Otherwise known as: the activity we want you to add to your to-do list this week. If you’re interested, of course.

Why do we think you should take a little time for some self love, sooner rather than later? Find out below.

1.  Orgasms = more orgasms.

We don’t have to tell you that orgasms are great. Or maybe we do. They’re great.

Orgasms can boost your mood, strengthen your pelvic floor muscles, and improve immune system function. A recent study found that frequent masturbation in women was associated with improved orgasmic function and satisfaction — and sex-perts agree.1 According to sex therapist Emily Morse, “masturbation expands your orgasmic potential.”2

So more masturbation = more orgasms. It’s like a pleasure Ferris wheel! And we’re begging you to get on (or should we say, get off).

2.  Someone’s gotta do it.

With the orgasm gap we have today, ensuring your own sexual satisfaction is an emergency. You shouldn’t have to rely on a partner to make you feel good! Heading to the masturbation station (sorry not sorry) is a great way to take control of your own pleasure and give yourself what you need. Can you tell that “Independent Women” is one of our favorite Destiny’s Child songs?

3. Because you can.

Once upon a time, the practice of masturbation was deeply frowned upon–or against the law. Don’t believe us? In the late 1710s, an anonymous writer released Onania; or, the heinous sin of self-pollution, a wildly popular anti-masturbation pamphlet that claimed masturbation was responsible for the degradation of the human race!

Though the pamphlet was chock full of pseudoscience and wild claims, over 15,000 copies were distributed.3 Today, there are still some countries where masturbation is punishable by jail time.4

4. We’re tired of the masturbation stigma.

Even though masturbation is (mostly) no longer illegal, there’s still plenty of societal stigma and shame around this kind of self-love. Especially when it comes to women.

In a 2016 personal essay, Caroline Martinez of The Bowdoin Orient writes: “When men begin to masturbate, it’s often seen as a rite of passage—something all guys do…when women do masturbate it’s often seen as deviant, dirty and characteristic of a promiscuous woman.”5

In fact, the taboo around masturbation is so widespread that in 1994, U.S. Surgeon General Jocelyn Elders was forced to resign from her post for suggesting that this essential part of human sexuality should be a part of formalized sex education.6 And though over 85% of surveyed women masturbate, you might still notice a hush in the room when the topic comes up.

What’s the number one weapon against a taboo? Talking openly about it. Consider giving yourself some pleasure this week—and don’t be afraid to talk about it with a trusted and consenting friend when appropriate. There’s no shame in our game.

5. It’s good for you.

Masturbation isn’t just a documented coping strategy for anxiety, depression, and psychological distress in women.8 It’s also been shown to increase libido and sexual drive, improve vaginal lubrication, relieve menstrual cramps, and sharpen focus.9 And that’s just a few of the health benefits. In reality, the list is endless (and highly documented).

P.S. If you’re looking for a little extra lubrication support, try URO Vaginal Moisture + Mood (or these sexual support capsules, if you’re on a perimenopause or menopause journey).

6. It can build up your sexual confidence.

Sex self-esteem is a real thing — and it can seriously impact the way that you feel in the bedroom. Part of feeling comfortable, connected, and engaged with your own body is knowing that body and what it enjoys. Think of masturbation as highly useful research here. Take a moment to experiment and make some observations! How do you feel? What’s working for you? Is there something new that you’re gravitating toward? These field notes will serve you well, during solo play or with a partner.

7. Why not?

Well, you’re not doing anything else this week, are you? Kidding. Sort of.

Seriously, engaging in self-pleasure can be an excellent way to relieve stress, honor your body, and have a little you time. If you’re in the mood, there’s no reason not to make some room in your schedule for that.

A note on sex and gender: Sex and gender exist on spectrums, and this article uses terms like “male” or “female” to refer to sex assigned at birth. Learn more
